McLaughlin and Thomas story

Our 2 x great-grandparents on the McLaughlin side were John McLaughlin and his wife Margaret Doherty. They had at least 4 children that we know of; there may have been some older ones. The fourth known child was our great-grandfather Thomas was born in 1856.

The farthest back on the Thomas side I have is our 3 x great-grandparents. I don’t have first names for them but according to the Colamosca chart, he was born in Wales and worked in Derry; she was born in Buncrana.

They had at least 3 children, John Thomas, who was our 2x great-granda and two daughters. No names for the daughters but one died young and the other never married.
John was born in 1830/31 and he married Susanna Gallagher who was born around the same time in Gortahork. John and Susanna had 7 children. Susanna died in 1901 aged 70; her place of death is recorded as Monglass which is near Killea. John died 4 years later in 1905 aged 74; his place of death is given as the home of his daughter Maggie and her husband Daniel Boyle at Ballougry which is just past Nixon’s Corner on the road to Carrigans. His profession is given as labourer.

Their third child was our great-granny Catherine Thomas who was born in 1859. Catherine married our great-granda, Thomas Mclaughlin in 1878. They had 8 children, the fifth one being Margaret Josephine, our granny who was born at 66 William Street on 18th May, 1886.

Catherine and Thomas Mclaughlin had 8 children altogether. Four of their children died young. Marcus, the oldest of the four, was 3 years of age and Granny Barr was about 5 when he died which is probably why she always had precious memories of him
Sadly, Catherine herself died in 1892, aged just 32. Granny Barr was only six at that time so she was obviously reared by Lizzie.

Five years later, Thomas married for a second time to an Elizabeth McLaughlin, known as Lizzie. They don’t seem to have had any children; the Colamosca chart shows none and in the 1901 census, he and Lizzie are living in Elmwood Street with 3 of the children from his previous marriage, including Granny Barr who was 14 years old and her occupation given as shirt factory worker. In the 1911 census, just he and Lizzie were living there.

Elizabeth died in 1927 aged 61 Thomas died in 1933 aged 73. Thomas, Catherine and Lizzie are all buried in Plot no DA471 in Derry cemetery along with the 4 children who died young. That is the same plot where Uncle Andy and his wife Maura are buried although their headstone only refers to them with no mention of the Thomas predecessors.
