“I got someone to have a look at this and they said the original picture is not even an original itself but an ‘over-sketched enlargement’ of it. He was very helpful and explained that before photo enlargers were invented the only way to enlarge a photo without the negative was to take a photo of the original and enlarge that. This caused a loss of definition and had to be over-sketched to bring out the picture (hence why the picture looks painted and lacks detail as if it were faded).”
